Richard L. Gelfand, M.D.

Richard Gelfand received his undergraduate degree in 1975 from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He continued his education at Georgetown University Medical School, where he graduated in 1979 as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. After completing his residency at Georgetown in 1981, he continued his training as a gastroenterology fellow at George Washington University. Dr. Gelfand is a Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners, and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology.

Throughout his career, he has held academic appointments including of Associate Clinical Professor at George Washington University and Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at Georgetown University.

In addition to his research projects and publications, Dr. Gelfand has performed Peer Review for the Maryland State Medical Society. Dr. Gelfand is an active lecturer to both lay and professional audiences, including speaking to community groups and teaching Gastroenterology Board Review courses for other physicians. He was a participant in Physician Leadership Academy training in association with Suburban Hospital.

He is married and enjoys spending time with his wife and three children. His personal interests include sports and outdoor activities including skiing and biking.
